Civics test guides
Which civics test do I take — the 2008 or the 2025 version?
It depends on the date you filed Form N-400, not your interview date. Filed on or after October 20, 2025: the 128-question test. Before: the 100-question test.
The 65/20 exemption: an easier civics test if you are 65 and a 20-year resident
If you are 65 or older and have held a green card for 20 years, you study 20 marked questions, the officer asks 10, you need 6, and you may test in your own language.
How the civics test is scored, and what counts as a correct answer
The officer asks up to 20 questions and stops at 12 right or 9 wrong. Any accepted answer counts — you do not need the exact wording. Here is exactly how it works.
